Health Care Reform – UPDATE: Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) Requirements
Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) Requirements
Starting September 23, 2012 or soon after, health insurance
issuers and group health plans will be required to provide an
easy-to-understand summary about a health plan’s benefits and coverage. The new
regulation is designed to help consumers better understand and evaluate their
health insurance choices.
The new forms include:
A short, plain language Summary of Benefits and Coverage, or
SBC
A uniform glossary of terms commonly used in health
insurance coverage, such as "deductible" and "copayment"
An SBC must be provided:

By first day of coverage (if there are any changes). If
there is any change in the information required to be in the SBC that was
provided upon application and before the first day of coverage, the plan or
issuer must update and provide a current SBC no later than the first day of
coverage.
Special enrollees. The SBC must be provided to special
enrollees no later than the date on which a summary plan description is
required to be provided (90 days from enrollment).
Upon renewal. If a plan or issuer requires participants and
beneficiaries to actively elect to maintain coverage during an open season, or
provides them with the opportunity to change coverage options in an open
season, the plan or issuer must provide the SBC at the same time it distributes
open season materials. If there is no requirement to renew (sometimes referred
to as an "evergreen" election), and no opportunity to change coverage
options, renewal is considered to be automatic and the SBC must be provided no
later than 30 days prior to the first day of the new plan or policy year.
Upon request. The SBC must be provided upon request for an
SBC or summary information about the health coverage as soon as practicable but
in no event later than seven business days following receipt of the request.

Meaty news: Look for labels on meats
Early in 2012, something changed in U.S. supermarkets. It may even have escaped your notice. It's small in size. But, it gives great power to people who eat meat — and also want to enjoy a more healthful diet.
It's the Nutrition Facts label now required on packages of chopped or ground meat and poultry.
Nutrition information must also be on — or posted near — 40 other popular cuts of meat, including chicken breasts, steaks and pork chops.

Ready to give your top performers a little boost next year?

Virtually all the companies Mercer canvassed — 98% — said they plan to give raises in 2013, according to a CNN story.
Looks like many employers are ready to shell out just a bit more in pay raises next year. What’s your firm planning to do? According to the HR consulting firm Mercer, the average raise for U.S. workers in 2013 will be 2.9% — a tad over the 2.7% they received the previous two years.
And how’s that pie going to be split up? Mercer says (no surprise here) that top performers — about 8% of the workforce — can expect hikes of about 4.5%.

The reason you want to send wellness communications at the end of the week
You want to hit employees with these messages before they head out to lunch. And you want to do it on Thursday and Friday because those are the days they’re most likely to nosh at a junk food joint.
A report by Bloomberg Businessweek says weekday salad sales are the highest on Monday and Tuesday.
Translation: Workers already tend to eat healthier at the start of the workweek (most likely because they are remorseful about their weekend diet). So you want to hit them with your wellness communications when they start to fall off the health wagon.

Massive study shows true return on wellness plan investment
